Frequently Asked Questions

What if my child has never played lacrosse?
Beginners are VERY welcome! Every player starts as a beginner. We teach and practice fundamental skills at every practice.
Providing meaningful playing time for all players in league games is a top priority at United. All players who show up and work hard, regardless of skill, will receive significant playing time during games.
United offers free Fall Clinics every year to introduce new players to the game of lacrosse.
If your child is interested in lacrosse, please purchase a lacrosse stick and ball as soon as possible and start practicing. (Please note: there are different, specific Girls and Boys sticks)

How physical is lacrosse?
Boys’ lacrosse is a contact sport. However, in the interest of young player safety, body and stick checking are either not allowed or are limited at Boys 8U and 10U levels.
Girls' lacrosse is a non-contact sport with no checking allowed at the elementary school level and limited stick-only checking at middle school level.

Eligibility
Families residing in Westlake, Thousand Oaks, and Oak Park communities are eligible to play for United Youth Lacrosse. If you live in a town that does not have its own youth lacrosse program (unaffiliated town) or if that town cannot field a team for your age group, you are also eligible to play for United Lacrosse, pending SCLA approval.

Age Groups - Spring 2026 Season
There are four age divisions for Boys Lacrosse and two for Girls. Age is determined as of 9/1 in the calendar year prior to the season (i.e., age as of 9/1/2025 will be used to determine eligibility for the 2026 Spring Season).
The number of registered players in each group determines the number of teams United fields in each age group.

Will children be able to play with their friends?
United accepts two "play with friends" requests during registration.
We promise to evaluate all requests fairly but we make no guarantees regarding fulfilling "play with friends" requests.
The United Board assigns players to teams to ensure the program is able to field as many teams as possible and that competition is fair and balanced within United and across SCLA.

What are Stars and Stripes teams?
For Boys 10U, 12U and 14U, the league allows programs to field Stars teams (made up of more experienced/more talented players) and Stripes teams (made up of less experienced/less talented players).
Stars teams from United play against Stars teams from other Towns. Stripes teams from United play against Stripes teams from other Towns.
The United board and coaches assess players at the 10U, 12U, and 14U levels during the first 2-3 weeks of practice and assigns players to appropriate teams in the best interest of player development.
All decisions regarding Stars vs Stripes assignments are at the sole discretion of the United board. However, if yous son would prefer to opt-out of consideration for placement on a Stars team – please let us know. Opting out of placement on a Stars team can increase the probability of friends playing together on a Stripes team.

What is "floating"?
Floating describes a scenario where a player who is rostered on one team is able to play a game(s) for another team. United and SCLA allow for floating on a limited basis.
  • Floating is allowed within the same division (i.e., from one 10U Stripes team to another 10U Stripes team or from one 12U Stars team to another 12U Stars team).

  • Floating is allowed from Stripes to Stars within the same age group (i.e., from one 12U Stripes team to a 12U Stars team)

  • Floating down a division is NOT allowed (i.e., players are NOT allowed to float from a 14U team to a Boys 12U team)

  • Floating from Stars to Stripes is NOT allowed (i.e., players are NOT allowed to float from a 14U Stars team to a 14U Stripes team)

  • Individual players are only allowed to float a maximum of 3 times throughout the season
